A friend stopped by yesterday on his 1972 BMW R60/5 partway through a one day, 3-state tour. The bike is completely original except for the handlebars and he is the 3rd owner. He’s planning to put a custom solo seat and a later disc-brake front end on it, but is keeping all the original parts and making no permanent modifications so any future owner can bring it back to completely original.

Awesome!
I love those old BMW boxers, but I always wonder... why is that crank case so damn big? What else is hiding in there?

Damn near everything. The upper area behind the “BMW R60/5 plaque” is the air box, the lower area back there is the transmission, then behind & above the plaque hides the starter, and the curved cover on the front hides the charging & ignition system.

I had no idea. Interesting, and thanks for sharing those cut-aways!

very nice. The hipster tax on old CB’s is getting so high I might just look for an old BMW for local putzing around. The ST just wants to be ridden aggressively and I want something more happy to be ridden casually. Really though, any reason to add another bike is a good one.
